Renewable Energy
Remote sensing for renewable energy including wind farm, solar and geothermal mapping has increased significantly during the past few years. WSI has completed renewable energy mapping projects from the Pacific Northwest to North Dakota to Southern California for both commercial energy firms and utility companies. Products have included high-resolution terrain models and contour maps to inform site feasibility or to support permitting and design, as well as as-built conditions of substations and existing transmission line interconnects. Supplementing the LiDAR data with high resolution orthophotos allows for RGB fusion of the point data and an imagery basemap for CAD, parcel or ground survey data.
Thermal Infrared data have been successfully used to detect and map physical processes on the landscape that are indicated by temperature differences. These processes can be naturally occurring or due to anthropogenic activities. WSI often co-acquires thermal data with LiDAR or imagery to provide true 3D mapping for geothermal sources. Past projects throughout the Western U.S. have successfully detected hotspots and provided clients with information for locating and planning ground based project efforts related to these sites.
